John Bahcall, a leading astrophysicist who was based at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton has died from a rare blood disease. Professor Bahcall had collaborated closely with World Scientific's publishing program on publications relating to Neutrino Physics.

NIST physicist John L. Hall is awarded the 2005 Nobel Prize in Physics for his work in the development of laser-based precision spectroscopy, including the optical frequency comb technique. World Scientific is proud to be the publisher of the Proceedings of the John Hall Symposium held at the University of Colorado in August 2004.

Hans Bethe (1906-2005) won the Nobel Prize in 1967 and he was the last of the giants of theoretical physicists during the 20th century. He had asked his long-time collaborator, Gerry Brown, to edit a book explaining his physics. Brown and Chang-Hwan Lee, also a Bethe collaborator, are putting together reviews by experts including C.N. Yang, Freeman Dyson, Neil Ashcroft, David Mermin, Boris Ioffe and others. This important new book Hans Bethe and His Physics will be out in Summer 2006.

Professor Gerard 't Hooft, the co-winner of the 1999 Nobel Prize for Physics was recently in Singapore to launch his newest book, 50 Years of Yang-Mills Theory, an occasion graced by His Excellency, Mr Hendrik van Pesh, the Netherlands Ambassador to Singapore, and attended by academics, researchers, and educators from the local Physics community.

Awarded by the Norwegian Academy of Science and Letters, the Abel Prize this year goes to Professor Peter D. Lax of the Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences, New York University. No stranger to World Scientific, Professor Lax sits on the editorial board of the Journal of Hyperbolic Differential Equations and was featured in Volume 2 of the Wolf Prize in Mathematics.

Hans A. Bethe, who was the author of one volume and editor of another volume of the "World Scientific Series in 20th Century Physics" published by World Scientific, died on 6 March 2005. He was 98, among the last of the giants who inaugurated the nuclear age.

World Scientific is saddened by the passing of world-renowned mathematician Shiing-Shen Chern.

The towering figure in differential geometry had rendered World Scientific strong support and assistance since our founding in the early 1980s. He had published several works with us and had given us invaluable advice.

For the discovery of asymptotic freedom in the theory of the strong interaction, World Scientific’s distinguished author Frank Wilczek (MIT) was awarded the 2004 Physics Nobel Prize. He shared the prize with David J Gross (University of California, Santa Barbara) and H David Politzer (Caltech).

Prof. Wilczek, who has hundreds of publications under his belt, is the author of two of WS acclaimed titles, namely Geometric Phases In Physics and Fractional Statistics And Anyon Superconductivity. Apart from Prof. Wilczek, Prof. Gross is also a contributor to WS volumes, including At the Frontier of Particle Physics.

Aaron Ciechanover (Israel Institute of Technology), editor of The Ubiquitin-Proteasome Proteolytic System shares the Nobel Prize in Chemistry 2004 with Avram Hershko and Irwin Rose. The trio are being honored for the discovery of ubiquitin-mediated protein degradation.

Some 50 people got together to celebrate the first anniversary of the Journal of Bioinformatics and Computational Biology, and its official launch. The red-letter day was, incidentally, a day before the birthdays of WS' Chairman Professor K K Phua and JBCB's managing editor Professor John Wooley.

World Scientific scored a first on February 18, taking the lead in Asia Pacific to avail electronic journals to a group of more than 100 universities in Mainland China. These universities hail from 13 districts in China and include top universities such as Tsinghua University and Peking University from Beijingas well as smaller ones like Yanshan University (Heilongjiang) and Agricultural University of Hebei.
